Currently, Honduran teachers are provided an annual extensive professional development session through the annual Teachers’ trip. US teachers travel to La Entrada to train, collaborate and work with the school’s Honduran educators, discussing new and innovative techniques for stronger classrooms. Hearts For Honduras plans to expand the relationships between working staff of the school with US based educators. In addition to developing stronger teachers of traditional subjects, Hearts For Honduras has begun to expand programs in music and the arts for the students of the school, in addition to offering sports, computer science and English coursework. Hearts For Honduras will continue to grow their extracurricular programs with the help of supporters at home. Hearts For Honduras is dedicated to providing a well-rounded curriculum for its students. The Hearts For Honduras school is also working hard to provide education and workshops for the families of the students of the school. Current programming includes health, nutrition, family values, and financial training, as well as spiritual guidance. A partnership with a local high school brings reading and writing workshops to parents of the students, as well. And, more recently, over 60 women were recruited for a “Mothers Club” where they learn the basics of preparing healthy, nutritious meals, hygiene, family relationships and are offered opportunities to generate income for the family and the school.
In 2010, Juan Carlos Lopez and his wife, Emilse, joined the Hearts For Honduras community. This represents an investment in the spiritual development of the teachers, students, graduates, and parents of the Hearts For Honduras School. In addition to worship services, Juan Carlos and his wife offer guidance and Christian education classes for students and parents and follow curriculum from ACSI (Association of Christian Schools, International). Monthly meetings of the graduates are also underway where social activities, personal values, and devotionals are combined into an evening of fun and learning. As these programs develop, we envision establishing a Sunday School and other programming for community members not currently attending church services.
As more of the Hearts For Honduras graduates complete sixth grade and continue on to middle and high school, the Foundation is committed to expanding financial support and assistance to further their education. Currently, four graduates are enrolled in University coursework and it is likely that this number will expand in the future, due to the success of the school and the passion of Paty Villanueva and her team. This push to sustain support is a substantial investment in the future success of the students of the school. An endowment has been created to sustain the school and graduates. The goal is to reach a $1.5 million endowment. However, even this will not provide enough to sustain the school. It represents less than ½ of what is needed to sustain and support students and graduates. sponsorships will continue to be sought to maintain and expand educational opportunities for the students of Hearts For Honduras School.
